Why wellbeing matters

What does wellbeing mean to you?

How do you assess and support employee wellbeing?

What is wellbeing?

Knowing what wellbeing is helps us to:

  • Recognise when employee wellbeing is high or low
  • Remedy: by carrying out actions which will improve employee wellbeing
  • Prevent: plan future actions to sustain employee wellbeing

Wellbeing is a very subjective and culturally bound concept. I’ve spent sometime researching different definitions and explanations for wellbeing in order to develop a valid and reliable measure of wellbeing. (More about this later!)

I’ll present some of these ideas below, take time to think about how they compare to your own personal and business definition of wellbeing.

Oxford English Dictionary

The state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.

World Health Organisation

Ability to achieve your potential, cope with stress, be productive and fruitful, and contribute to your community.

Czerw (2017)

Hedonic: pleasure, comfort and enjoyment

Eudemonic: growth, meaning and authenticity

Deci and Ryan (2008)

Positive state connected to the experience of emotions and the cognitive assessment or our lives.

Rath and Harter (2010)

A poll of 150 countries found wellbeing encompasses positive:

  • Career
  • Social
  • Financial
  • Physical
  • Community

How is employee wellbeing beneficial?

Ford et al. (2011) conducted a meta-analysis of studies across the world and found that high employee wellbeing led to:

  • Better work quality
  • Effective time use
  • Better relationships
  • Fewer conflicts
  • More loyalty
  • More innovation

Hallberg et al. (2007) also found that high employee wellbeing:

  • Reduced depression
  • Lowered hypertension
